Back in 1982 Hence was visiting home ( Kansas City ) for the holidays. She was amazed at the popcorn shops that were mushrooming all over town. Since she is a popcorn addict, she decided after returning to San Francisco to open her own store. She talked a friend ( Nancy ) into joining her. They spent months working on putting together recipes and a business plan. In 1983 Thatcher's Winston Store was inaugurated at 180 Howard St.. where it is still serving the best popcorn . Soon later, the business was booming , they opened 2 more stores in the City . They sold the business in 1988 due to an illness to Hence. She passed away in 1995 but her legacy remains. Thatcher's has gotten better and better due to the solid foundations it was built on. It is a well known household name in the Bay Area and it is being sold now nationwide and in 6 different countries around the globe. In 1995 The New York Times picked our popcorn as the best in the U.S. We will always be committed to making the best ever gourmet popcorn using the finest ingredients available.
